{"id":34039,"date":"2012-03-12T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2012-03-12T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brookings.alley.test\/research\/drafting-egypts-new-constitution\/"},"modified":"2022-09-07T13:54:09","modified_gmt":"2022-09-07T13:54:09","slug":"drafting-egypts-new-constitution","status":"publish","type":"research","link":"https:\/\/mecouncil-afkar.fuegodigitalmedia.qa\/en\/research\/drafting-egypts-new-constitution\/","title":{"rendered":"Drafting Egypt&#8217;s New Constitution"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>With parliamentary elections now complete, Egypt moves to the next major step in its fitful political transition &#8212; drafting a new constitution for the republic.\u00a0As the fundamental document establishing a framework for governance, the new Egyptian constitution will have a lasting effect on Egyptian law, politics, and society.\u00a0 However, Egypt\u2019s transition is shaping up to be a case study in how <i>not<\/i> to initiate a constitution-writing process.<\/p>\n<p>At a time when the shortcomings of a mismanaged transition threaten to undermine the constitution-writing process, author Tamir Moustafa identifies the most important issues to be tackled by the country\u2019s Constituent Assembly.
