Algerian news outlets also closely followed <a class=\"js-external-link\" href=\"http:\/\/www.elkhabar.com\/ar\/autres\/dernieres_nouvelles\/443328.html\">reprisal attacks<\/a> <a class=\"js-external-link\" href=\"http:\/\/www.elkhabar.com\/ar\/autres\/hadath\/442679.html\">on mosques<\/a> and <a class=\"js-external-link\" href=\"http:\/\/www.lequotidien-oran.com\/index.php?news=5208351&amp;archive_date=2015-01-11\">Muslim communities<\/a> within the country.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"js-external-link\" href=\"http:\/\/www.elkhabar.com\/ar\/autres\/dernieres_nouvelles\/442496.html\">Algerian officials<\/a> quickly condemned the killings, and President Bouteflika emphasized his government\u2019s \u201c<a class=\"js-external-link\" href=\"http:\/\/www.echoroukonline.com\/ara\/articles\/229003.html\">commitment to combatting terrorism<\/a>.\u201d Foreign Minister Ramtame Lamamra <a class=\"js-external-link\" href=\"http:\/\/www.algerie-focus.com\/blog\/2015\/01\/tuerie-de-charlie-hebdo-le-ministre-algerien-ramtane-lamamra-participera-dimanche-a-une-marche-a-paris\/\">announced his participation<\/a> in a January 11 anti-terrorism rally in Paris, while underscoring that the Kouachi brothers <a class=\"js-external-link\" href=\"http:\/\/www.echoroukonline.com\/ara\/articles\/229381.html\">were not Algerian citizens<\/a>and had never visited the country.<\/p>\n<p>Algerian politicians such as Abdel Qader Hadoush, the Member of Parliament responsible for Algerian expatriates in the south of France, <a class=\"js-external-link\" href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=-sd0SR4M26k\">emphasized<\/a> distinctions between Algerian citizens and French citizens of Algerian origin, as well as between violent extremists and mainstream Muslim communities in Europe.<\/p>\n<p>The most extreme reaction came from fringe figures such as fugitive terrorist Mukhtar Belmukhtar, who <a class=\"js-external-link\" href=\"http:\/\/www.echoroukonline.com\/ara\/articles\/229443.html\">praised the attacks<\/a> and encouraged more like them in France and the West, in remarks reported by <em>Echerouk<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The Algerian media discussion also focused on <em>Charlie Hebdo\u2019s<\/em> history of publishing satirical cartoons about Islam and other religions and authority figures. <em>ElKhabar\u2019s<\/em> story entitled \u201c<a class=\"js-external-link\" href=\"http:\/\/www.elkhabar.com\/ar\/autres\/hadath\/442604.html\">Charlie Hebdo Pays the Price for \u2018Sharia Hebdo\u2019<\/a>,\u201d referenced an issue the magazine ran in 2011 satirizing aspects of Islam.<\/p>\n<p>Ennahar television\u2019s initial coverage described <em>Charlie Hebdo<\/em> as part of a \u201c<a class=\"js-external-link\" href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=BVNqtSyMeX4\">campaign of provocation<\/a>\u201d against Muslim communities in Europe, though Algerian cartoonist Ghilas Ainouche <a class=\"js-external-link\" href=\"http:\/\/www.algerie-focus.com\/blog\/2015\/01\/ghilas-ainouche-caricaturiste-algerien-je-ne-vois-pas-comment-lon-peut-dire-que-charlie-hebdo-est-islamophobe\/\">reflected positively<\/a> on his internship with the weekly. Abdou Semmar, one of the leading columnists on <em>Algerie Focus<\/em>, attempted to rebut <a class=\"js-external-link\" href=\"http:\/\/www.algerie-focus.com\/blog\/2015\/01\/tuerie-a-charlie-hebdo-ces-theories-du-complot-qui-remettent-en-cause-la-version-officielle\/\">conspiracy theories<\/a> that claimed the attacks had been staged or carried out by <a class=\"js-external-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=P083Nhv-2Wg\">French or foreign intelligence services<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Other commentators condemned what they called double standards in international and regional reactions to the terrorist attacks. Coverage of the Paris march in <em>Echorouk <\/em>entitled \u201c<a class=\"js-external-link\" href=\"http:\/\/www.echoroukonline.com\/ara\/articles\/229360.html\">Shame on You, Arab Leaders!<\/a>\u201d criticized Arab leaders for expressing solidarity with French victims while remaining silent over hundreds of thousands of Arabs killed or displaced in conflicts around the region. Commentary <a class=\"js-external-link\" href=\"http:\/\/www.elkhabar.com\/ar\/monde\/443372.html\">highlighted<\/a> the participation of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in the march as well as the lack of equivalent solidarity over last summer\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Zpi5p-213AM#t=1068\">fighting in Gaza<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Algerian media criticisms of <em>Charlie Hebdo<\/em> intensified after the January 14 publication of a new issue on\u00a0 featuring a <a class=\"js-external-link\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/libe\/status\/554752478630379523\/photo\/1\">cartoon<\/a> of the Prophet Muhammad. <em>Echerouk<\/em>\u2019s edition for the day included a front-page cartoon in which protesters demonstrating against intervention in Mali, Libya, Syria and Iraq are <a class=\"js-external-link\" href=\"http:\/\/pdf.echoroukonline.com\/ara\/dzstatic\/pdfdownload\/2014\/4617_640116596.pdfhttp:\/pdf.echoroukonline.com\/ara\/dzstatic\/pdfdownload\/2014\/4617_640116596.pdf\">crushed by a tank<\/a> \u2013 for \u201cwhen the matter relates to Arabs.\u201dEcherouk news station produced <a class=\"js-external-link\" href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=E0moLV7TjLY\">a 6-hour series<\/a> on the cartoons entitled \u201cI am Muhammad \u2013 No to Terrorism and No to Insulting Religions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The small French-language daily <em>Quotidien d\u2019Oran<\/em> devoted much of its January 15<sup>th<\/sup> edition to the subject, under the headline \u201c<a class=\"js-external-link\" href=\"http:\/\/www.lequotidien-oran.com\/pdfs\/15012015.zip\">Charlie Hebdo: Oil on the Flames<\/a>.\u201d Writer M\u2019hammedi Bouzina urged <a class=\"js-external-link\" href=\"http:\/\/www.lequotidien-oran.com\/index.php?news=5208506&amp;archive_date=2015-01-15\">solidarity<\/a> with victims in France regardless of the circumstances. In response, journalist Boudjan Hadj-Chikh emphasized the need to <a class=\"js-external-link\" href=\"http:\/\/www.lequotidien-oran.com\/index.php?news=5208504&amp;archive_date=2015-01-15\">extend that solidarity<\/a> to promote values of liberty, equality, and fraternity around the world.<\/p>\n<p>Algeria experienced <a class=\"js-external-link\" href=\"http:\/\/www.echoroukonline.com\/ara\/articles\/229905.html\">large protests<\/a> over the issue of <em>Charlie Hebdo<\/em> on January 16<sup>th<\/sup>. Islamist leaders Ali Belhadj and Hamadache Zeraoui <a class=\"js-external-link\" href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/2015\/01\/16\/us-france-shooting-algeria-idUSKBN0KP1WW20150116\">were detained<\/a> for organizing a march <a class=\"js-external-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=SP3DG6TAXJc\">in the capital of Algiers<\/a>, where protests are banned. Muhammad Issa, minister for religious affairs and endowments, made it clear that the protests <a class=\"js-external-link\" href=\"http:\/\/www.elkhabar.com\/ar\/watan\/444355.html\">had no official backing<\/a> from the state\u2019s religious leaders.<\/p>\n<p><em>Algerie Focus<\/em> writer Abdou Semmar, while <a href=\"http:\/\/www.algerie-focus.com\/blog\/2015\/01\/non-les-freres-kouachi-ne-sont-pas-mes-chouhadas-par-abdou-semmar\/#sthash.cCdu4LfV.dpuf\">defending Algerians\u2019 right to protest<\/a>, expressed concern over <a class=\"js-external-link\" href=\"http:\/\/www.algerie-focus.com\/blog\/2015\/01\/plusieurs-centaines-de-personnes-manifestent-a-alger-khaybar-khaybar-ya-yahud\/\">reports<\/a> that protestors chanted in support of ISIS and referred to the Kouachi brothers as \u201cmartyrs.\u201d He also accused the Algerian regime of encouraging such extremist views through repression.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The attacks on Charlie Hebdo\u2019s staff and the subsequent hostage-taking in Porte de Vincennes were well-covered in Algerian media.
