Al-Jarallah warned that the crisis threatened to derail the work of numerous GCC initiatives.<\/p>\n<div class=\"inline-widget alignright\">\n<div class=\"inline-widget-inner\">\n<article class=\"archive-view profile has-placeholder-img\">\n<div class=\"expert-image\">\n<div class=\"image-wrapper small\">\n<h2><strong>HOUTHI POLITICAL CHIEF SALEH SALEH AL-SAMMAD KILLED IN SAUDI AIR RAIDS<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>A Houthi-run Al-Masirah TV network <a class=\"js-external-link\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-middle-east-43872482\">reported<\/a> on Monday, April 23, that Saleh al-Sammad, political leader of Yemen\u2019s Houthi rebels has been killed in Saudi-led air strikes in the Hudaydah province. Al-Sammad was the president of the Supreme Political Council that runs Yemen\u2019s capital, Sanaa, and other rebel-held areas. He died on Thursday. There was no immediate comment by the Saudi-led coalition. The group said it had <a class=\"js-external-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/indepth\/features\/saleh-al-sammad-yemen-houthis-180424170317613.html\">elected<\/a> Mahdi al-Mashat as al-Sammad\u2019s successor.<\/p>\n<p>A day before, Saudi-led coalition attacks in Yemen had <a class=\"js-external-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2018\/04\/yemen-saudi-coalition-air-strikes-kill-20-wedding-hajjah-180423102037150.html\">killed<\/a> at least 20 people, many of whom were women and children in a wedding tent, in Hajjah\u2019s Bani Qays district. According to a medical official, at least 46 people, including 30 children, were wounded in the attack.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>CATHOLIC CARDINAL MEETS SAUDI KING IN HISTORIC VISIT TO RIYADH<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>On Wednesday, April 18, Saudi Arabia\u2019s King Salman met French cardinal Jean-Louis Tauran in Riyadh, <a class=\"js-external-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-saudi-vatican\/catholic-cardinal-meets-saudi-king-in-historic-visit-to-riyadh-idUSKBN1HP1T6\">according<\/a> to Saudi state news agency, SPA. The <a class=\"js-external-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.alaraby.co.uk\/english\/news\/2018\/4\/19\/vatican-cardinal-meets-saudi-king-in-historic-riyadh-visit\">meeting<\/a> between the Saudi king and Tauran, who is the head of the Vatican\u2019s Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue, is the first between the current Saudi ruler and a Catholic official. The visit is the latest in a series of meetings between senior Saudi officials and representatives of the Catholic Church in recent months.<\/p>\n<h2><b>DIPLOMATIC<\/b><strong>\u00a0LEAKS: UAE DISSATISFIED WITH SAUDI POLICIES\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Al Akhbar, a Lebanese newspaper, <a class=\"js-external-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2018\/04\/diplomatic-leaks-uae-dissatisfied-saudi-policies-180417083917746.html\">said<\/a> that it has obtained leaked documents that contained secret diplomatic briefings sent by the Emirati and Jordanian ambassadors in Beirut to their respective governments. One of the documents, issued on September 20, 2017, disclosed the outcome of a meeting between Jordan\u2019s ambassador to Lebanon Nabil Masarwa and his Kuwaiti counterpart Abdel-Al al-Qenaie.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed is working on breaking up the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia,\u201d the Jordanian envoy <a class=\"js-external-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailysabah.com\/mideast\/2018\/04\/19\/uae-works-on-breaking-up-with-saudi-arabia-according-to-diplomatic-leaks\">quoted<\/a> the Kuwait ambassador as saying. The document said the Jordanian ambassador informed his government that the UAE believes \u201cSaudi policies are failing both domestically and abroad, especially in Lebanon.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>SAUDI IN TALKS WITH US OVER TROOP DEPLOYMENT IN SYRIA<\/h2>\n<p>Saudi Arabia\u2019s foreign minister, Adel al-Jubeir, has said the country is <a class=\"js-external-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2018\/04\/saudi-talks-troop-deployment-syria-180417193232765.html\">holding talks<\/a> with the United States about sending troops into Syria as part of a wider international coalition. In his comments, al-Jubeir said the deployment offer was \u201cnot new\u201d, adding that Riyadh had previously proposed the idea to former U.S. President Barack Obama.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"js-external-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.middleeastmonitor.com\/20180418-saudi-in-discussion-with-us-over-troop-deployment-in-syria\/\">The announcement<\/a> follows recent comments by U.S. President Donald Trump over future American involvement in Syria. Earlier this month Trump said he wanted to \u201cget out\u201d of Syria, without specifying a timetable for pulling out U.S. troops. He expressed his intent to assemble an Arab force that would replace the U.S. military presence in Syria and would include the countries of Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and the United Arab Emirates.<\/p>\n<h2>QATARI FORCES PARTICIPATE\u00a0IN GULF SHIELD DRILL IN SAUDI ARABIA<\/h2>\n<p>The Qatari armed forces have <a class=\"js-external-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2018\/04\/qatari-forces-participate-gulf-shield-drill-saudi-arabia-180419053305193.html\">participated<\/a>in the \u201cJoint Gulf Shield 1\u201d Drill in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Qatar News Agency(QNA) said. The military drill was <a class=\"js-external-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-gulf-qatar-military\/qatar-joins-gulf-war-games-in-apparent-compromise-idUSKBN1HQ0ZT\">conducted<\/a> in the town of Ras Al Khair, north of Jubail city in the eastern region of the kingdom, from March 21 to April 16, QNA quoted the defense ministry as saying.<\/p>\n<p>According to QNA, the closing ceremony was <a class=\"js-external-link\" href=\"http:\/\/www.middleeasteye.net\/news\/qatar-joined-saudi-forces-gulf-sheild-war-games-says-doha-758920137\">attended<\/a> by the Qatar Armed Forces\u2019 Chief of Staff, Major General Ghanem bin Shaheen al-Ghanem, at the invitation of his Saudi counterpart Lt General Fayyad bin Hamed al-Ruwayli.<\/p>\n<h2>SAUDI FOREIGN MINISTER FOLLOWS TRUMP\u2019S STATEMENT, SAYING QATAR MUST PAY FOR TROOPS IN SYRIA<\/h2>\n<p>Saudi Arabia\u2019s foreign minister Adel al-Jubeir saidQatar must pay for the U.S. military presence in Syria if it wants to sustain Washington\u2019s support. He made these remarks hours after President Donald Trump <a class=\"js-external-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2018\/04\/trump-immensely-wealthy-countries-pay-protection-180425080106208.html\">said<\/a> that some \u201cimmensely wealthy\u201d countries in the Middle East have to pay for American protection and deploy their own troops in Syria. Speaking at a news conference with French President Emmanuel Macron on Tuesday, Trump said these countries \u201cwouldn\u2019t last a week\u201d without U.S. support. \u201c Countries that are in the area, some of which are immensely wealthy, would not be there except for the United States, and to a lesser extent France,\u201d Trump said.<\/p>\n<p>Trump did not name the countries but stressed that \u201cthey will pay\u201d before adding that \u201cthey will also put soldiers on the ground.\u201d Trump seemed to backtrack on an earlier decision to withdraw U.S. forces from Syria, when he stressed on Tuesday that it was important to prevent the expansion of Iranian influence in the region.<\/p>\n<p>Al-Jubeir said the \u201c[Qatari] regime would fall there in less than a week\u201d if the U.S. pulls its troops out of Qatar. \u201cQatar has to pay for U.S. military presence in Syria and send its military forces there, before the U.S. president cancels U.S. protection of Qatar, which hosts a [U.S.] military base on its lands,\u201d al-Jubeir said in a statement carried by the official Saudi Press Agency (SPA) on Thursday.<\/p>\n<h2>POMPEO ARRIVES IN SAUDI ARABIA TO SEND MESSAGE ON QATAR BLOCKADE<\/h2>\n<p>On Saturday, April 28, Mike Pompeo <a class=\"js-external-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/04\/28\/world\/middleeast\/mike-pompeo-saudi-arabia-qatar-blockade.html\">flew to Saudi Arabia<\/a> and met with Foreign Minister Adel Al-Jubeir and Crown Prince Mohamed Bin Salman. During the meeting, the subject of the Qatar blockade was discussed. According to an unnamed, but authorized, senior state department official, Pompeo advised Al-Jubeir to <a class=\"js-external-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2018\/04\/mike-pompeo-saudi-arabia-qatar-blockade-180429054625262.html\">end the blockade<\/a> with Qatar. This came on the heels of President Trump\u2019s meeting with Qatar\u2019s Emir Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani, in which Trump conveyed support for the country, despite his earlier stance in which he seemingly supported the Saudis in the blockade.
